12 July was the 18th anniversary of the massacre in Srebrenica
and Foreign Secretary William Hague’s speech about it was in the news.
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia
(ICTY), which is a United Nations court of law, has a brief history of the Bosnia and Herzegovina conflict of 1992-1995, which
says:
The single worst atrocity of the war occurred in the summer
of 1995 when the Bosnian town of Srebrenica ,
a UN-declared safe area, came under attack by forces lead by the Bosnian Serb
commander Ratko Mladić. During a few days in early July, more than 8,000
Bosnian Muslim men and boys were executed by Serb forces in an act of genocide.
The rest of the town’s women and children were driven out.
