This is an old post from when Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe was being seen as the worst dictator in Africa in about 2008.
Democracy Now! on 10 July 2008 compared him to Equatorial Guinea's Teodoro Obiang who, according to BBC news in 2014, seized power from his uncle in 1979 and was re-elected in 2009 with 95% of the vote. DN reported how, following the discovery of vast oil and natural gas reserves in Equatorial Guinea in the mid-1990s, Obiang became a close ally of the USA and in 2006 he visited Washington and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice described him as a “good friend” of the USA.
